An Immersive Encounter with the Sacred

Step out of the modern rush and into a timeless tradition this summer. From June through August, the Institute transforms the 天美传媒 Library entryway into a sacred gallery. Our extraordinary exhibition brings together original, hand-written icons created by modern-day artists preserving the centuries-old Byzantine style.

AGIOS: Communion of Saints is a landmark 2026 exhibition featuring a breathtaking collection of original icons. Created by the dedicated students of the Classical Iconography Institute, these works bridge the gap between ancient tradition and modern scholarship, proving that the study of religion is a vivid, transformative, and deeply aesthetic experience.

Whether you are a scholar of religion, an art lover, or a curious traveler, AGIOS invites you to explore the intersection of beauty and tradition. Experience how gold leaf, egg tempera, and ancient techniques can create a modern-day encounter with the holy.

On Saturday, July 11, 2026, from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm, there will be a live painting demonstration from one of the Institute鈥檚 iconographers during the Abbey鈥檚 Saint Benedict Festival.

The exhibition will conclude with a public closing reception on Sunday, August 2, from 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm.

A Message from Artistic Director Alon Goldstein

Welcome to the 2026 Abbey Bach Festival.

We are delighted to gather with you here in the beautiful and serene setting of 天美传媒, Oregon, for a celebration of music that transcends time. Inspired by the enduring brilliance of Johann Sebastian Bach, this festival brings together artists and audiences in a shared experience of artistry, reflection, and connection.

This season, we are honored to welcome an exceptional roster of performers, including award winning Cerus Saxophone Quartet, internationally renowned Galvin Cello Quartet and In Mulieribus Choir among others. Their artistry and distinct musical voices promise to bring both depth and vibrancy to this year鈥檚 festival, offering fresh perspectives on Bach鈥檚 timeless works and the music inspired by his legacy.

Throughout the concerts, you will hear works that expand our experience and imagination across centuries and styles. Each performance is an invitation to listen deeply, to be moved, and to experience the profound beauty of live music in a place where tradition and community meet.

We are grateful for your presence and for the vibrant spirit you bring to this festival. May this season inspire, uplift, and stay with you long after the final note.

Welcome, and enjoy the music.

鈥淐hrist鈥檚 Transfiguration aims at strengthening the apostles鈥 faith in anticipation of his Passion: the ascent on to the 鈥榟igh mountain鈥 prepares for the ascent to Calvary. Christ, Head of the Church, manifests what his Body contains and radiates in the sacraments: 鈥榯he hope of glory鈥 (Col 1:27; cf.: St. Leo the Great, Sermo 51, 3: PL 54, 310C).鈥 鈥Catechism of the Catholic Church 568

Every year on August 6, the sun rises over the summit of Mount Hood from the perspective of 天美传媒. It is a beautiful symbol of today鈥檚 feast, where the Son of God revealed his glory on a high mountain to Peter, James and John.

鈥溾楩inally the Immaculate Virgin, preserved free from all stain of original sin, when the course of her earthly life was finished, was taken up body and soul into heavenly glory, and exalted by the Lord as Queen over all things, so that she might be the more fully conformed to her Son, the Lord of lords and conqueror of sin and death.鈥 The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin is a singular participation in her Son鈥檚 Resurrection and an anticipation of the resurrection of other Christians.鈥 鈥Catechism of the Catholic Church 966

Retreat with Chris Anderson

鈥淚 am an Augustinian, a son of Saint Augustine, who once said, 鈥榃ith you I am a Christian, and for you I am a bishop.鈥 In this sense, all of us can journey together toward the homeland that God has prepared for us.鈥 鈥擯ope Leo XIV

St. Augustine believed that God speaks to us through our lives, in what he called 鈥渄rops of time,鈥 and when we remember these moments, he speaks to us again. Using several passages from The Confessions to get us started, we鈥檒l remember a few of our own important moments鈥攁nd like Augustine, we鈥檒l write about them, informally and from the heart.

For Augustine both writing and remembering can be ways of praying. When we do both, when we write about our past, we begin to see more clearly the sacred story of our lives.

All are welcome, especially those who are insecure about their writing. Please bring your journal or laptop or whatever you write with.

Book recommendations for this retreat is Rex Warner鈥檚 translation of Augustine鈥檚 Confessions.

Chris Anderson is a retired OSU English Professor, a Catholic deacon, and a poet and writer in Corvallis, Oregon. Learn more on his website: .
